Publishing Note: Solution to Problems

Independent-minded authors, those with a more entrepreneurial spirit, can encounter myriad problems on their journey to book publication. These problems come in all shapes and sizes and are liable to crop up at every turn. Solutions are more plentiful, it seems, than the problems they are intended to solve. If you don’t know what you don’t know, how can you decide which solution, or which person or company offering a solution, to choose?

Entrepreneurs may be inclined to jump right in and try whichever solution presents itself first or strikes you intuitively as something that could work. You may instead like to investigate a bit further before investing time and money in a given course of action. Or you may want confirmation that a particular solution works, based on the experience of others. Then who do you trust? Will you rely primarily on people you know, those separated by no more than one degree of separation? Or will you rely on strangers whose identity you can’t actually verify because they only exist online behind layers of metadata? You need to find and trust experts in the field, people with solid reputations, recommendations, and impressive resumes.

A few words of advice on finding solutions to problems:

1. Remedy ignorance with reliable information.
2. Weigh the value of recommendations in the aggregate.
3. Trust the expertise of reputable strangers but not in isolation or to the exclusion of known friends.
4. Balance gut instinct with dispassionate reason.
5. No need to reinvent the wheel where a clear solution presents itself.
6. In the absence of a clearcut solution, don’t waffle between evenly attractive options; just choose one and move ahead. Indecision is a foe best vanquished quickly.
